Cebu Launches Groundbreaking Support for Abuse and Trauma Survivors
Cebu’s provincial government has launched new support systems for survivors of abuse and trauma. The initiative includes specialised medical care, mental health services, and the construction of modern shelters designed for recovery and safety. Governor Pamela Baricuatro and Provincia Health Office Chief Dr. Shiela Faciol introduced new medical and psychological frameworks this week. These include psychological first aid, structured trauma processing, and improved access to mental health treatment for those in need.
The Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office has begun building ‘smart houses’ within the Women and Children in Crisis Intervention Center at Balay ni Neneng. Each unit will feature air conditioning, a fully equipped kitchen, and space for 8 to 10 survivors, along with administrative offices. To reach more victims, the government is setting up help desks and referral systems at major transport hubs across Cebu. Medications for mental illness, anxiety, and depression have also been stockpiled and will be distributed by trained psychologists. For younger survivors, the programme offers play therapy and art therapy. These services aim to help children process trauma and regain emotional stability in a supportive environment.
The new facilities and services will provide immediate shelter, medical care, and long-term mental health support. Survivors will have access to specialised treatment, while the expanded referral network ensures help reaches those in need more efficiently.
