Bhiwandi hospital leaves patients in darkness during power failure
A surprise inspection at IGM Hospital in Bhiwandi revealed alarming conditions as the facility operated in complete darkness during a power outage. Patients, including those in critical care, endured severe heat and humidity without electricity, prompting sharp criticism from local MPs.
MP Suresh Mhatre discovered the hospital functioning without power during his unannounced visit. Despite having a generator facility, it remained non-operational, leaving patients—especially those in the ICU—without essential support. Hospital superintendent Madhavi Pandhare’s response to the situation raised further concerns about accountability within the institution.
The inspection also brought attention to delays in the Mother and Child Care Hospital construction project. MP Balya Mama condemned the slow progress, alleging that the contractor had missed the agreed deadline. He highlighted discrepancies in the reported completion status and demanded a high-level inquiry into the matter. Mama strongly criticised the hospital administration for failing to protect patients from extreme conditions. He announced plans to meet Maharashtra’s Chief Minister to push for strict action against responsible officials and address the ongoing issues.
The inspection exposed critical failures in both emergency preparedness and project management at IGM Hospital. With calls for an official inquiry and administrative reforms, the incident has placed pressure on authorities to resolve the situation swiftly. Patients and construction timelines now depend on the outcome of these discussions.
