Pilot Project: New Preventive Care for Girls and Women in Bavaria - Bavaria launches groundbreaking health checks for girls and menopause screening
Bavaria is taking steps to improve women's health insurance and equity through new screening programs. Health Minister Judith Gerlach has announced plans for a preventive health check, called Mädchensprechstunde, aimed at teenage girls aged 12 to 17, alongside a menopause screening initiative. The moves come as concerns grow over misdiagnoses linked to gender differences in medicine, with women often underrepresented in clinical trials and symptoms of conditions like heart attacks and mental health disorders differing significantly between genders.
The Mädchensprechstunde initiative will offer preventive health checks for girls, addressing health issues early and providing tailored medical advice. Meanwhile, a pilot program for menopause screening is already underway at the Women's Clinic of the Technical University of Munich, including structured discussions on symptoms and health risks during the menopausal transition.
Gerlach highlighted persistent problems in women's health equity, such as delayed or incorrect diagnoses, and stressed the need for deeper integration of gender-sensitive approaches in medical education, research, and clinical settings. Her pledge includes expanding research into gender-specific medicine to ensure better diagnosis and treatment for women across all stages of life.
The new programs aim to close gaps in women's health equity by focusing on prevention and gender-specific research. With the pilot menopause screening already in progress, Bavaria's Health Ministry plans to roll out further measures in the coming years, seeking to reduce misdiagnoses and improve long-term health outcomes for women and girls.
