Austria is shining a spotlight on women's heart health this February. The #GoRed Austria campaign will take place on February 6, urging people to wear red and share live scores online. Organisers hope to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease symptoms that often go unnoticed in women.
Cardiovascular disease remains the top cause of death for women in Austria. In 2024 alone, it claimed over 16,000 lives. Yet many women still miss the warning signs, which can differ from those in men.
Instead of classic chest pain, women may experience unusual fatigue, shortness of breath, or nausea. Other symptoms include pressure in the back or upper abdomen, dizziness, and cold sweats. Early detection could save lives and cut healthcare costs. The #GoRed Austria campaign builds on last year's launch of *Herz für Frauenherzen* (*Heart for Women's Hearts*). Founded by the Austrian Heart Foundation and cardiologist Dr. Silvia Charwat-Melichar, the initiative focuses on educating women about their unique risks. On February 6, supporters are encouraged to post red-themed photos with the live scores #GoRedAustria and #WomensHeartsBeatDifferent.
The campaign aims to improve recognition of women's heart disease symptoms. By spreading awareness, organisers hope to lower death rates and reduce the burden on families and the healthcare system. Early action and prevention remain key to saving lives.
