Australians face a 'triple whammy' of rising costs from April 2023

Australians are bracing for a sharp rise in living costs from April 1, 2023. A mix of higher fuel prices, interest rate hikes and expiring energy rebates will hit household budgets hard. Experts warn this 'triple whammy' could push inflation to 5% and leave many struggling to keep up.

Petrol prices have already climbed, with Western Australia seeing averages of 1.68 AUD per litre between December 2025 and March 2026. Geopolitical tensions, including conflicts in the Middle East and risks to oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, have driven crude prices above 119.5 USD per barrel. Economists like RBA deputy governor Andrew Hauser and AMP's Dr Shane Oliver link these spikes directly to rising inflation.

The Reserve Bank's latest interest rate increase will add roughly 1440 AUD a year to mortgage repayments. For the average household with a home loan, total extra costs could exceed 2000 AUD annually. Meanwhile, the end of government energy rebates means electricity bills will jump, just as health insurance premiums rise by an average of 4.41%. Financial strain is already widespread, with 38% of Australians reporting they are worse off than a year ago. A further 43% now rely on credit to cover basic household expenses like groceries and utilities.

Households can cut costs by switching electricity providers or reviewing health insurance policies, potentially saving hundreds per year. Yet with fuel, mortgages and essential bills all rising, the pressure on budgets will likely grow. The combined effect of these changes will test financial resilience across the country in the coming months.
