Amanda Peet Opens Up About Her Year-Long Breast Cancer Battle
Actress Amanda Peet has shared her breast cancer journey in a personal essay for The New Yorker. The diagnosis came during an already difficult time, as both her parents were in hospice care. Her story highlights the emotional and medical challenges she faced over the past year.
Peet's ordeal began with a routine scan at the start of the year. The results led to a biopsy, which uncovered a small tumour in her breast. Doctors later classified it as Stage I breast cancer.
An MRI then revealed a second mass in the same breast, forcing a delay in her planned lumpectomy. A biopsy of this second growth was painful and left her with a 50% chance of further cancer. Fortunately, the mass turned out to be benign, sparing her from a mastectomy or chemotherapy.
Her cancer was identified as hormone-receptor-positive and HER2-negative, a type that generally responds well to treatment. Peet ultimately underwent a lumpectomy followed by radiation. Throughout this period, she also supported her mother in her final days and arranged her funeral.
Peet's diagnosis and treatment unfolded while she cared for her terminally ill parents. Her case was resolved with surgery and radiation, avoiding more aggressive treatments. The actress has now spoken openly about the experience in her own words.
