Alex de Minaur’s Sun-Safe Mission Ahead of the 2026 Australian Open
World number six Alex de Minaur is preparing for the 2026 Australian Open, where high temperatures will test players arriving from cooler climates. The home favourite, known for his rigorous sun protection habits, has also launched a new campaign to promote skin safety among young tennis players.
De Minaur’s commitment to sun safety began in childhood. His mother instilled early habits like wearing hats and applying sunscreen, lessons he still follows today. Even in winter, he stresses that Australia's sun remains dangerous, urging year-round protection.
As an ambassador for La Roche-Posay, he recently co-founded 'Play Safe in the Sun', an initiative teaching junior players about UV risks and healthy routines. The programme aims to make sun protection as routine as warming up before a match. On court, the 25-year-old takes no chances. He wears a cap, sunglasses, and broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen, reapplying it throughout practice and matches. Off court, he seeks shade whenever possible and prioritises hydration and rest ahead of the January 18 tournament start. The Melbourne crowd's support adds to his motivation. But with temperatures often soaring above 35°C, overseas competitors may struggle to adapt as quickly as the local star.
The 2026 Australian Open will see de Minaur balancing his own performance with advocacy for sun safety. His campaign with La Roche-Posay targets young athletes, while his personal routines set an example for players facing Australia's harsh conditions. The tournament's main draw begins in January, with heat and UV exposure among the key challenges.
