A Week of Action: How One District Celebrated International Women's Day 2026
The Equal Opportunities Office of the District Administration marked International Women's Day 2026 with a week-long campaign. Events ranged from cultural gatherings to discussions on gender equality, drawing attention to ongoing challenges. Social media played a key role in spreading awareness through quizzes and informative posts about sexism. The 'Around International Women's Day' campaign kicked off with a variety of activities. A vernissage, charity concert, reading, film discussion, and feminist literary evening took place across the district. The literary event, held jointly with neighbouring districts and a city, attracted 55 participants.
On March 20, the Aschaffenburg Women's Hearing celebrated its 40th anniversary. The group reflected on past successes while reaffirming its commitment to a fairer future. Meanwhile, the district installed a new red bench in Großostheim's Ringheim Citizens' Park, bringing the total to ten. These benches serve as silent reminders of domestic and sexualised violence against women, urging communities to take action. International Women's Day itself traces back to Clara Zetkin's 1910 proposal. Over 116 years, women's rights have advanced, yet full equality remains out of reach. The campaign highlighted both progress and the work still needed.
The 2026 campaign combined cultural events with calls for change. Red benches now stand in ten locations, symbolising the fight against violence. Organisers continue pushing for a society where gender equality is no longer an unfinished goal.
