A Gen X woman embraces first-time motherhood just shy of 40

A woman from Generation X has shared her experience of becoming a first-time mother just weeks before turning 40. Her journey reflects broader shifts in society, where later pregnancies are now more common but still come with challenges. Medical guidelines classify such pregnancies as high-risk, requiring extra care and monitoring.

The woman discovered she was pregnant at 39, giving birth to her first child the following May. Her son arrived just four and a half weeks before her 40th birthday, which she celebrated at a rooftop bar in Manhattan. With her one-month-old baby present, she limited herself to a single glass of wine due to breastfeeding.

Her mother had also given birth later in life—at nearly 38 in the 1960s, a time when older mothers faced more stigma. Today, attitudes have softened, with more women in Germany and Switzerland delaying parenthood for careers. Yet, fertility declines with age, and assisted reproduction has legal limits, such as Germany's ban on egg donation.

Pregnancies at 35 and older are now considered high-risk, requiring closer medical supervision. The woman's husband, seven years her senior, was 46 when their child was born. While they both prioritise health, they've stepped back from activities like skiing, finding parenting more physically demanding as they age.

Current support systems include extended prenatal care, parental leave—though mothers typically take longer than fathers—and expanded childcare. Still, employment and pension gaps between genders remain.

The woman's story highlights how later motherhood has become more accepted but still involves medical and personal adjustments. With societal norms evolving, older parents now navigate a mix of improved support and lingering challenges. Her experience underscores the balance between career, health, and family in modern life.
