A 94-Year-Old's Unyielding Fight to Preserve Belarusian Heritage Abroad
Nadia Zaprudnik, a 94-year-old Belarusian woman, now resides in a New Jersey nursing home. Her life story spans continents, wars, and a lifelong dedication to preserving her cultural roots. Born in 1932, she has witnessed immense change—and yet her spirit remains unwavering.
Nadia was born in the Polesian village of Litov'ye, Belarus, as one of eight children. Tragedy struck early when four of her siblings died young. Her childhood was cut short by World War II, forcing her family to flee their home and seek refuge in Germany.
After the war, Nadia and her relatives emigrated to the United States, settling in Pennsylvania. There, she met Yanko Zaprudnik, a historian and publicist who shared her passion for Belarusian culture. Together, they married and became lifelong partners in promoting their heritage. Alongside Yanko, Nadia sponsored initiatives such as publishing books and organizing cultural events. Their work was joined by Vitali Zaprudnik, another historian and publicist who had also emigrated with them.
Despite the hardships she faced, Nadia remained active—both physically and mentally. Her resilience became her guiding principle, summed up in her simple yet powerful advice: never give up.
Nadia's journey reflects perseverance through displacement, loss, and cultural dedication. Her efforts, alongside her husband and Vitali, helped sustain Belarusian traditions abroad. Today, her story stands as a testament to the enduring impact of community and heritage.
