63-Year-Old Woman Defies Odds, Gives Birth After IVF Loss

A 63-year-old woman from Suihua, China, has given birth to a healthy baby girl after undergoing in vitro fertilisation (IVF). The birth comes years after she lost her only son to cancer when he was 35, prompting her decision to become a mother again.

Despite warnings from relatives and doctors about the risks of pregnancy at her age, the woman proceeded with IVF. Medical professionals worldwide, including groups like the ASRM and ESHRE, have highlighted severe health dangers for women over 60 attempting IVF. These include high rates of ovarian hyperstimulation, miscarriages (over 90%), chromosomal abnormalities, preterm births, and maternal complications such as preeclampsia. Success rates for live births in this age group are also extremely low, typically below 1-5% per cycle, due to declining egg quality.

Throughout her pregnancy, the woman's health remained stable, reportedly better than that of some younger patients during childbirth. After nine months, she delivered a healthy daughter. To ensure her child's future, she has made arrangements for her nephew to care for the girl if anything happens to her. The new mother has expressed confidence in raising her daughter, noting that her own parents are still alive to offer support.

The birth marks a rare case of late-life motherhood, defying medical recommendations and statistical odds. With her family's backing and contingency plans in place, the woman now focuses on raising her newborn daughter.
