3D-Printed Implant Could Reverse Spinal Cord Damage Using RNA Tech

Scientists at RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences have created a 3D-printed implant that could help repair spinal cord injuries. The breakthrough, detailed in Bioactive Materials, combines a custom scaffold with RNA technology to encourage damaged nerve cells to regrow. Currently, such injuries often lead to permanent paralysis because neurons in the central nervous system struggle to heal themselves.

The implant is designed to mimic the stiffness and structure of human spinal tissue. This reduces the risk of further damage while giving cells a stable framework to attach to. At the same time, it delivers small interfering RNA (siRNA) to block the PTEN gene, which normally prevents neurons from regenerating after injury.

In lab tests, injured neurons exposed to the RNA-activated implant showed a much greater ability to grow across the damaged area. The project also involved the Irish Rugby Football Union Charitable Trust, ensuring the research addresses real-world needs of people with spinal cord injuries.

The next phase will test the approach in living organisms. Researchers aim to see whether the RNA-activated biomaterials can help bridge gaps in damaged spinal cords and restore lost nerve connections. However, further trials are required before the technology can move to human patients.

The study marks a step forward in treating spinal cord injuries, where recovery has long been limited. The 3D implant, combined with gene-silencing RNA, has shown promise in lab models. Future testing will determine whether it can safely and effectively restore function in more complex biological systems.
